Peru has a forest cover 73.3 million hectares, with the Amazon Rainforest, covering more than 60% of the country’s territory. The Peruvian Ministry of Environment (MINAM) estimates the country’s annual deforestation rate at approximately 0.15%, which is relatively low when compared to its South American neighbors. However, deforestation is considered the primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the country.

Peru submitted its Readiness Preparation Proposal (R-PP) to the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) in March 2011, and was accepted in early 2014, with grant agreement signed in June 2014.Peru later presented the final version of its investment plan under the Forest Investment Program (FIP), and was approved for an award of US$ 41.8 million.
